Abstract:
Autonomy is a widely used concept in education policy and practice. The etymology of the concept derives from the Greek autonomos ‘having its own laws’. As such, the debates around the concept circulate around individuals’ or groups’ ability and capacity to self-rule, and the governance and/or constraints, which limit such a capacity. The concept has been defined in a variety of ways. The concept of teacher autonomy refers to the professional independence of teachers in schools, especially the degree to which they can make autonomous decisions about what they teach to students and how they teach it. Autonomy as the degree to which teachers are able to control their work. There are certain factors which effects autonomy. Accountability is the responsibility that goes with the authority to do something. The responsibility is to use authority justifiably and credibly. Teacher autonomy, with its implications of freedom from constraints, is related to accountability in teaching. Accountability may be viewed from several aspects.
